The Quiznos Master LLC. Doctor’s Associates Inc. (aka Subway). Two private fast food chains specializing in delicious subs at reasonable prices. A battle as old as memory itself. Which toasty sandwich restaurant will withstand the tests of time and come to reign supreme? We will just have to wait and see. Except it’s probably going to be Subway. Yeah, almost definitely Subway. Like the comparisons between Burger King and McDonald’s, the Quiznos/Subway conflict isn’t exactly the epic fight of the ages that it’s hyped up to be.
Quiznos, with their moderately wimpy collection 5,114 restaurants worldwide, is less than one-sixth the size of Subway’s 33,049 restaurant-strong empire (they are the biggest single restaurant chain on the planet). Personally, I prefer Quiznos over Subway; their meat doesn’t look as freeze-dried and the subs just taste better. However, like their analogous parallel Burger King, the second largest sub company in North America just loves wacky, sex-themed commercials that actually don’t make you want to eat anywhere near one of their restaurants.

But I digress. It’s not like you can buy stock in either of these companies anyway. In order to hop on the quick-service sub sandwich bandwagon you would have to do something big. Something like … purchase your very own Quiznos or Subway franchise! Yes! They have applications online (Quiznos). And more applications online (Subway). It’s so easy!
In order to open your very own Quiznos franchise, all you need is a 670 credit score, a net worth of $125,000 (including $70,000 in liquid assets), and a willingness to invest $187,800 – $341,800 plus rent to begin operations! Also, the $5,000 – $25,000 franchise fee and then a 7% ongoing royalty fee, but then you’re set for the next 15 years (or later, it’s renewable). Quiznos reportedly receives a franchise application about every 40 minutes, so you’d probably have some competition, but they also sell a franchise every four hours.
For Subway the total investment is estimated at $114,800 – $258,300, including the $15,000 franchise fee plus 12.5% in ongoing royalties.
Both Quiznos and Subway have ranked multiple times in Entrepreneur Magazine‘s Franchise 500 rankings. Quiznos peaked at #2 on the list in 2006, but is not present on the list this year. Subway has held the #1 spot nine out of the last 10 years (7-Eleven was #1 in 2008). There are also exactly zero (0) company owned Subways in the world, so for them everything is in the hands of the franchisees.
So, if you want a sub franchise, go ahead and apply. Don’t be afraid to chase your dreams.
And then there’s Blimpie, but nobody cares about that.
